Sleeping on your back during pregnancy - Why is it not very good?

Written by

When you are in your 9th month of pregnancy, you go through mixed feelings of anxiety, happiness and this period is also a time when you are most uncomfortable physically, as you are big and have to carry this extra weight around. Pregnant women in their last trimester are also not very comfortable sleeping.  Trying to find a comfortable position and getting a good night of sleep is tough for many pregnant women,

but back sleepers are going to find it even harder. When you lie with your tummy facing up, the weight of your expanded uterus can actually compress the inferior vena cava, a major blood vessel carrying blood from the lower regions of your body. This can limit blood flow to the unborn baby, and it can also leave you feeling dizzy, nauseous and short of breath.

According to doctors, the best sleeping position for pregnant women is on the left side because the vena cava is situated to the right of the spine. Sleeping on your left will allow blood to flow more easily to the baby. If you have a tough time getting comfortable on your side, try putting a pillow underneath your belly and between your knees.
